Shenzhen Book City and other English bookstores in Shenzhen

Shenzhen Book City

Shenzhen has 3 stores in Shenzhen.

Louhu Book City

The Book City in Louhu is located at the Da Ju Yuan Metro Station, just next to MixC Shopping Mall. This is the original Book City in Shenzhen and is really starting to show its age. It has a great selection language books which help foreigners learn Mandarin. Otherwise, you will be stifled by the very limited choices in English language books. Luohu Book City was primarily set up as a text book hub for schools, colleges and Universities, and continues to do so for students.

Futian Book City

Futian Book City is located at the Shao Nian Gong Metro Station. This place is very new and very well laid out. With a large Chinese and text book shop in the centre, the surrounding areas include Pizza Hut, some coffee shops, the book bar, a 24 hour book store and also a large English book store with magazines and books covering a vast number of topics. The prices are very similar to HK; you will find that all the books and magazines have come from HK directly. The magazines are a little outdated and over-priced due to the face that the books needs to be checked and regulated by the Chinese government. This is just something we have to live with, I guess. Outside Book City is the Shenzhen Library.

Nanshan Book City

Nanshan Book City has a small English book section for adults, and a English book section for children located on the 5th floor.

Large selection of original English children’s books for readers 2 to 18, and even some French, German and Spanish books. They stock mainly DK, Scholastic Houghton Mifflin, Puffin and Walker books. Many prices are half of or less than the printed prices. They can organize book fairs for international schools.

Yiwen bookstore

This imported books store is the first imported books store in the city. Yiwen also sells novels and books on film, design and business management, novels, children’s books, history, politics, IT, and science books. Books at the store can get quite expensive compared to domestic books. Except for some cheap classic novels, an imported book costs about 10 percent higher than that in the publishing countries. Yet the bookstore does have some books that are hard to find elsewhere in the city.

Yiwen bookstore is located at Futian Book City, on the basement floor.

The Book Bar

The Book Bar is located in Futian Book City (the last stop of the metro line 4; you can transfer at Hui Zhan Zhong Xin) on the eastern side of the building.

When you enter, it is littered with Chinese literature and wine. The place is decorated with an oriental feel, tea beds, sofas, low coffee tables and TV’s.

The crowd that frequents is usually the quiet young upper class Chinese.

Its a pretty cool place to take a date after dinner. If you take your own wine, they charge around 50rmb for corkage fees per bottle.
