Introduction
The Shekou Hash meets every Saturday come rain or shine at The Snake Pit (Shekou Sports and Social Club) at 2-00pm and departs at 2-30pm by private bus. The cost is Rmb 60 which includes the transport, beer and soft drinks.
What is the Shekou Hash? The Hash is a “drinking club with a running problem”. More specifically the Hash is a social get-together that revolves around going on a run or a walk, which is about an hour long. A different running and walking trail is planned for each week and the bus ride to the run site can be as short as 20 minutes to a little over one hour. Trails range in length and difficulty, and are usually about an hour long. At the end of the trail we gather together for what we call the down-down. At the down-down we have a few beers or soft drinks and enjoy ourselves for a while, then back on the bus returning to the Snake Pit and Shekou arriving at around 7:00. A diner is planned every week and most of the Hashers will proceed to where ever the restaurant is for that week for more fun and food with the cost at the restaurant normally between 35 to 45 Rmb.
Hashing is not particular to Shekou, though Hashing has been around since 1938, and there is a Hash House in nearly every major city in the world. The format for all Hashes is basically the same everywhere, running and beer drinking, hence the slogan “drinking club with a running problem”
