Introduction
In 1996 two Scots men, who would and could not accept living in Shekou without a game of rugby union decided to round up all those interested, to train and play their first game, and from that day on Shekou Rugby was formed.
Unfortunately sometime later it was stopped due to a lack of players so because of this it changed to touch rugby only. At first it was difficult with only about six people turning out every Wednesday evening, but as the years went by the interest increased and now more than 20 people that gather to spin the ball at the China Merchants pitch in Shekou. The Wednesday practice game is a mix of men and women, with an annual tournament held usually the weekend before the HK 7s.
In early 2001 some players restarted the Rugby union side, participating at the Macau beach tournament first, then over a period of time managed to get a full squad of 15 players challenging for the Guangzhou tournament in 2005.
Since then Shekou Rugby has participated in many local tournament, winning the Guangzhou 10’s in 2007 and winning the Macau Beach in 2008.
In 2008 the first Shekou 10s was organized, inviting teams from HK, Macau and China, thus seeing the creation of a second rugby club in Shenzhen. Since then Shekou and Shenzhen Union rugby have played together on tour in competitions in Asia and are still active today with Touch practice in Shekou on Wednesday night 8 pm China Merchant pitch and Union practice in Xili Thursday night at 8 pm.

Hey, I got your info from the Wiki-Shenzhen. I’ve been working and playing rugby in Korea (Busan Bulls RFC), and am now traveling in China on my own. I see that you guys practice at 8:30pm every Thursday, and I’m going to be in Shenzhou Wednesday March 30 – Fri April 1, 2011 so I would love to get a run-around with you guys if possible. Hopefully get some touch going, and if not, just being able to throw the rugby ball around would be miraculous. I’ve got no phone so the best way to get back to me is by email.
